Americans do well to get to 2nd round of Open

Our American women have done well in the first round of the US Open in Flushing Meadows, NY. Including Venus Williams who has since pulled out due to an illness, seven women made it to the second round. The most impressive to me was Christina McHale who has already taken out  #8 seeded  Marion Bartoli in the second round. Besides Venus and Christina, the list of ladies in the second round include Serena, Sloane Stevens, Vania King, Madison Keys and Irina Falconi. Congratulation to them all. Sloane, Christina,  and Madison are all teenagers and Irina a college student who was player of the year at Georgia Tech in 2010.

Jack Sox is the boy’s champion and he leads a group of eight American men into the second round. Mardy Fish is now the top ranked American but Andy Roddick and James Blake old familiar names also made good on the first two days of play. Donald Young has been a hopeful for the last few years as an up and coming, he is joined also by Alex Bogomolov, Robby Ginepri and John Isner ready for the next round. Fish and Isner have both had a  great summer in the lead up tournaments called the US Open Series where Mardy won first place. That means if he wins the US Open he receives an extra one million dollars  in prize money to go with the 1.4 million awarded the the Open winner.

You can follow the US Open on ESPN2 and The Tennis Channel starting at 11am. Plus you can follow on line at USOpen.Org

Come back for more American players news and progress at the Open tomorrow as the second round is completed.
